Final Stretch

Its the last week of the spring semester. This time of year always seems like there is so much to do with so little time. The last week of the semester is what I call the procrastonator’s only busy week of the year. You have finals coming, the obvious abominable monster, then you have move out day from your dorm or apartment, trying to decide what day you leave and how your transporting your life that you seemed to fit into a couple boxes back home. Then there’s the biggest decision of all looming right over your head. What’s next? This question is different for underclassmen because unless they are transferring schools you know you’ll be be right back where you are now in August. But for people graduating, at a 2 year or 4 year school, the sophmores and seniors have a big decision to make. Where they will finish the next two years of school or where will they be working after graduation. Im a student athlete so for me its not just where will I be continuing my education but where will I be playing basketball as well. Or do I even want to continue playing basketball? A lot of decisions to be made during the final stretch. It is very easy to become overwhelmed. One thing that helps is prioritizing. Making a list or mini calendar. Outline everything coming up that you have to do. Assignments, exams, study regimen, etc and you can kind of stay on top it or at least maintain some basis of organization instead of getting lost in all of the chaos during the final stretch. Attached below is a video with tips for college students that helps a lot. Good luck and Godspeed!

Nipsey Island

Unless you have been sleeping under a rock then you may have heard of the passing of Nipsey Hussle, most known as a rapper but much more than that. And unless you went to Coachella or have Amazon Prime, then you may have not seen the next film by Donald Glover called “Guava Island”. In my tweet I talked about how both of these things resonated with me in the same way. Deni Maroon is the fictional character in Guava Island. He is a local celebrity, loved by the whole island truly a man of his people on a mission to bring them at least one day of peace and enjoyment with his musical festival ignoring all bribes and threats to cancel it. Much like Deni, Nipsey Hussle is the epitome of “The People’s Champ”. He is from Compton, California and despite his success he still lives there. He is also a business and entrepreneur and instead of starting business in areas that are more financially affluent, his main clothing store was on the street he grew up on. He really bought back most of his own street. He would hire friends and other people that may not be able to get work due to criminal records or other circumstances. Was known to pay for funeral costs and other expenses of people in the neighborhood. Every one speaks of him in the same way and only has the utmost respect and love for him. Everything he did was for his community and for the people he loved. His mission was to empower his people. And yet, he was killed by one of his own. A man from the neighborhood he grew up in. They say success breeds envy. That’s what drove this senseless act of hate that led Nipsey Hussle to be murdered. Well known in life his message was spread, but in death, like Deni in Guava Island after he was murdered, his message and his words have been spread so far and wide. People that didn’t know of him and the work that he was doing now do and his reach has been amplified ten fold in death. Not that he was a great musician, he was also Grammy nominated, but his music is unparalleled to the work that he was doing and the man that he was but even now I mourn but then I see how so many people have come together and rallied behind his name in the sake of people and a better tomorrow. That’s the the good feeling I get and it feels just like when the exact thing happens at the end of Guava Island. His body may not be present but his energy is here and it’s up to us to make his work live on.

imDeLaney

Hey there, I’m De’Laney, if you didn’t know that already. Yes I AM De’Laney but who IS De’Laney! Something you obviously don’t want to be around because because he refers to himself in third person like some kind of weirdo. Joking! Just put that because it sounded cool.. in my head at least, if not when you read it lol but I digress! I like to consider myself a king of all trades and never really like to box myself into one thing because this world just has so much more to offer. I am a model and an actor, but not limited to such. I also write poetry, and perform spoken word. Along with that I also am a student athlete. I play college basketball. I draw as well, I like to hike and do much more than that. Like I said, there’s a lot of cool things to do in this life and I want to do and experience as much of it as I can. That’s just a brief glimpse of some of the things that I do but no activity defines me as a person. On here I’ll post all things related to me, whether it be a highlight from my basketball season, updates on my upcoming castings or roles that I’m going out to audition for, or even my outfit of the day and things fashion related. Also can be found on all social media “@imdelaney” And if you’re still here reading this, thank you so much. I appreciate your time and support!
